Every number on this page has a named source and a date. Numbers checked August 4, 2026. This page is refreshed quarterly; next pass November 2026.

Quick answer: Generative-AI tools drew 9.5 billion web visits per month as of May 2026, up 70% year over year (Similarweb). ChatGPT's share of that traffic fell from 76% to 53% in eleven months while Gemini and Claude absorbed the growth. And the domain LLMs cite more than any other is Reddit, referenced in 40.1% of answers Semrush analyzed.

Five sections: market share, referral volume and value, citation behavior, who gets cited, and ads inside AI answers.

Who is winning AI search market share in 2026?

  • Generative-AI platforms averaged 9.5 billion monthly web visits in the year to May 2026, up 70% year over year (Similarweb, AI Search Stats in 2026).
  • Unique visitors reached 655 million (+57%); app downloads hit 4.4 billion (+58%) over the same period (Similarweb, May 2026).
  • ChatGPT's share of gen-AI traffic dropped from about 76% in June 2025 to roughly 53% by May 2026. Its absolute visit count stayed roughly flat — the category grew around it (Similarweb).
  • Gemini rose from under 9% to about 27–28% of gen-AI traffic; Claude grew from about 2% to 9% (Similarweb, May 2026).
  • Claude's mobile app MAU grew roughly 1,318% between June 2025 and May 2026, the fastest of any assistant (Similarweb).

What it means: "AI search" stopped being a synonym for ChatGPT sometime in early 2026. If your referral tracking or visibility monitoring covers one assistant, you are now measuring half the channel. And the platforms themselves churn fast — OpenAI launched and shut down ChatGPT Pulse inside a year, so build reporting on referrer patterns, not product names.

How much traffic do AI assistants actually send?

  • LLM referral traffic to websites tripled between January and December 2025, growing 80% from H1 to H2 (Further, 13 months of client Google Analytics data, Jan 2025–Feb 2026, published on Search Engine Land).
  • It is still small: under 2% of referral traffic on average — roughly 25 times less than organic search or direct (Further, Feb 2026).
  • ChatGPT drives 87.4% of tracked AI referral sessions. Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Copilot combined account for the remaining 12.6% (Lantern, tracked-domain data, early 2026).
  • Since ChatGPT's May 2026 update, about 62–63% of its referral clicks land on homepages rather than deep pages (Similarweb, May 2026).
  • The traffic converts: around 18%, the highest-converting source in Further's dataset — ahead of paid shopping, SEO, and PPC (Further, Feb 2026). Lantern independently measured AI referrals converting at 4.4x the rate of organic search visitors.

What it means: A small pipe carrying unusually warm visitors. The assistant already did the comparison shopping, so whoever gets the click gets a pre-sold buyer. Note the mismatch with the market-share table: ChatGPT holds 53% of usage but 87% of referrals, because Gemini's answers tend to keep users inside Google's ecosystem. And with most ChatGPT clicks now landing on homepages, your homepage is doing landing-page duty whether you designed it for that or not.

How often do AI answers cite sources — and does anyone click?

  • 6.8% of US ChatGPT responses carried citations in May 2026, up from 1.6% in June 2025 — a 4x jump in one year (Similarweb).
  • Citation rates vary sharply by topic: travel and hospitality around 23%, automotive around 20%, professional services under 4% (Similarweb, May 2026).
  • 18% of Google searches produced an AI summary in March 2025 (Pew Research Center, 68,879 searches from 900 US adults).
  • When an AI summary appeared, users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits, versus 15% without one (Pew, March 2025 data).
  • Links inside the AI summary itself were clicked on 1% of visits (Pew).
  • 26% of visits with an AI summary ended the browsing session entirely, versus 16% without (Pew).

What it means: Citations quadrupled in a year; clicks did not follow. The links exist mostly as provenance, not as traffic. Treat presence inside the answer as the asset and the click as a bonus — which is the working definition of GEO, and why the next question matters more than any ranking report.

Which sites do AI assistants cite most?

  • Reddit is the most-cited domain in LLM answers: 40.1% of the 150,000+ citations Semrush analyzed referenced reddit.com (Semrush, June 2025, via Visual Capitalist).
  • The rest of the top five: Wikipedia 26.3%, YouTube 23.5%, Google 23.3%, Yelp 21.0% (Semrush, June 2025; answers can cite multiple domains, so shares overlap).
  • Google's AI summaries lean the same way: Wikipedia, YouTube, and Reddit together supply 15% of all cited sources (Pew, March 2025).
  • Citations now have a price tag. Reddit's "other revenue," which includes data licensing, hit $43 million in Q2 2026, up 24% year over year (Reddit earnings, July 30, 2026) — and Reddit has internally debated walking away from its ~$60M/year Google licensing deal (WSJ reporting, July 22, 2026; background in our Reddit–Google deal explainer).

What it means: Assistants weight community consensus over brand copy — a thread where real users compare tools outranks the vendor's own feature page in the answer layer. We covered why Reddit became the top source for AI answers in depth. Disclosure: this is also why we build Prowlo — an MCP-native data layer that lets AI agents read Reddit, X, and Hacker News threads as structured data. If 40% of citations trace back to community threads, agents that can research those threads directly see what the answer layer sees.

Are there ads inside AI answers now?

  • About 26% of ChatGPT responses contained an ad by May 2026 (Similarweb).
  • OpenAI is testing a format where clicking an ad opens a conversation with the advertiser's AI agent — fed by the company's product data and MCP tools — instead of a landing page (Search Engine Land, July 31, 2026).

What it means: The answer layer is monetizing, which makes organic citations scarcer real estate over time. The agent-ad test also previews where this goes: not links out, but agents talking to agents with live business data behind them. The organic version of that visibility — being cited, being present in the threads assistants read — is the part you can still earn.

About these numbers

Sources are limited to primary research and named measurement datasets: Similarweb (platform traffic, citation rates, ads), Semrush (citation domains), Pew Research Center (AI Overview click behavior), Further via Search Engine Land (referral volume and conversion), Lantern (referral share by assistant), Reddit's Q2 2026 earnings, and WSJ reporting. Figures marked with "~" are the source's own approximations. Numbers checked August 4, 2026; stats that no longer verify get removed at each quarterly pass, not silently kept.

FAQ

How much website traffic comes from AI assistants?

Under 2% of referral traffic on average — roughly 25 times less than organic search or direct — per Further's analysis of client Google Analytics data from January 2025 to February 2026. But it tripled during 2025, and Lantern pegs it near 1% of total sessions and climbing monthly.

Which AI assistant sends the most referral traffic?

ChatGPT, by a wide margin: 87.4% of AI referral sessions in Lantern's early-2026 tracking, with Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Copilot splitting the remaining 12.6%. That is despite ChatGPT holding only 53% of generative-AI usage — Gemini's answers tend to keep users inside Google's ecosystem rather than sending them out.

What website do LLMs cite the most?

Reddit. Semrush's June 2025 analysis of 150,000+ LLM citations found reddit.com referenced in 40.1% of answers, ahead of Wikipedia (26.3%), YouTube (23.5%), Google (23.3%), and Yelp (21.0%). Pew found the same pattern in Google's AI summaries, where Wikipedia, YouTube, and Reddit supply 15% of cited sources.

Do Google AI Overviews reduce clicks to websites?

Yes, by roughly half. Pew Research Center tracked 68,879 real searches from March 2025: users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% without one. Links inside the summary itself were clicked on just 1% of visits to pages showing one.

Is ChatGPT losing market share in AI search?

Relative share, yes: from about 76% of generative-AI traffic in June 2025 to roughly 53% by May 2026 (Similarweb). Absolute ChatGPT visits stayed roughly flat — the category grew 70% and Gemini and Claude absorbed the growth. Claude's app MAU rose about 1,318% over the same period.
