ChatGPT Ads That Launch AI Business Agents: What OpenAI Is Building and How to Prepare

Egidijus A.·Aug 4, 2026

Clicking an ad has meant the same thing for thirty years: you land on a webpage. OpenAI is testing a version where the click opens a conversation instead — with an AI agent that speaks for the advertiser, answers product questions, and captures the lead before a website ever loads.

Quick answer: ChatGPT ads are already live for Free and Go users in the US — labeled, shown below answers, bought self-serve at ads.openai.com since May 2026. The new part, spotted in Ads Manager on July 31, 2026 (Search Engine Land): an "Agent" campaign type where clicking the ad opens a business-specific AI agent built from four inputs — a crawl of your site, your product feed, MCP tools for live data, and lead-gen forms. Those four inputs are the preparation checklist.

What are ChatGPT ads, and how do they work today?

ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements shown below ChatGPT's answers to Free and Go tier users in the US, matched to the conversation topic. OpenAI began testing them on February 9, 2026, opened a self-serve Ads Manager beta with CPC bidding on May 5, 2026, and states that ads never change the answer itself.

The rollout has been fast. OpenAI cut the pilot minimum from $200,000 to $50,000 in April 2026 when the first Ads Manager shipped (eMarketer, April 2026), then opened self-serve registration at ads.openai.com a month later with agency partners including Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis, and WPP. By May 2026, roughly 26% of ChatGPT responses already contained an ad (Similarweb, May 2026 data). Paid tiers — Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu — stay ad-free, and ads don't appear in Temporary Chats or the Atlas browser (OpenAI Help Center, checked August 2026).

The economics are still forming — there's no public rate card, and OpenAI plans more bidding options beyond CPM and CPC. For context on how a mature conversation-adjacent channel prices, see our breakdown of Reddit ads pricing and ROI. The difference here: OpenAI is targeting $2.5 billion in ad revenue by the end of 2026 and projects $100 billion by 2030 (eMarketer, April 2026). That target is why the format is evolving mid-flight.

What are the "business agent" ads OpenAI is testing?

On July 31, 2026, Search Engine Land reported a new campaign type inside ChatGPT Ads Manager: ads that launch a conversation with a business-specific AI agent instead of sending the click to a URL. Entrepreneur Juozas Kaziukėnas spotted the option and shared it on LinkedIn: "OpenAI is working on a fundamentally different advertising type — ads that launch business agents."

The workflow has three parts, per the report:

  1. Business profiling. ChatGPT crawls the advertiser's website and auto-generates a business profile — common customer questions, support information, general context.
  2. Agent configuration. The advertiser layers custom instructions on top of that profile and connects data sources: product feeds, Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools for live business data, and custom lead-generation forms.
  3. Agent-powered campaigns. The campaign points users into a conversation with that agent rather than to a landing page.

Two caveats matter. The capability exists in Ads Manager for a limited group of advertisers, and the end-user experience hasn't been widely observed — nobody outside OpenAI knows yet how prominently these ads will surface. This is active infrastructure, not a confirmed public rollout. It's also not an isolated bet: Google has announced similar business-agent functionality for shopping ads (Search Engine Roundtable, July 31, 2026), so the pattern is forming across both major ad platforms at once.

Why does an agent change what happens after the click?

Because the conversation becomes the destination. MarTech's August 4, 2026 analysis put it plainly: for decades an ad click opened a webpage; this model flips that. The agent can answer objections, recommend a specific SKU, book an appointment, or qualify a lead in the same thread where the ad appeared — no bounce, no form abandonment, no "where's the pricing page."

There's early evidence conversational traffic is worth the trouble: LLM referral visits convert at 30–40%, far above typical search or social traffic (Similarweb, May 2026 data). An agent that keeps the user inside the conversation compounds that — if it has accurate information to work with.

That's the catch. A landing page degrades gracefully when it's stale; an agent doesn't. It states your outdated price with confidence, promises stock you don't have, or answers a support question with last year's policy. In agent-mediated advertising, your data pipeline is your ad quality. (This is the same shift driving ambient agents — software that acts continuously on live data rather than waiting for a human to click through pages.)

How do you prepare your business for agent-launching ads?

Work backwards from the four inputs OpenAI's flow uses. Each one is something you can improve this quarter, and each also pays off in organic AI visibility even if you never buy an ad.

1. Make your site produce an accurate business profile

The agent's base layer is whatever ChatGPT's crawl of your site yields. Audit what a crawler actually finds: current pricing, support policies, shipping and returns, an FAQ that matches how customers phrase questions. Then check your robots.txt and WAF rules — OpenAI states that retailers blocking automated access simply get skipped in ChatGPT's shopping research while competitors fill the slot (OpenAI shopping documentation, checked July 2026). A blanket bot-block is now a paid and organic visibility problem.

2. Get the product feed to spec

Product feed campaigns already exist in Ads Manager: you upload a catalog over SFTP, mark items with is_ads_eligible, and the ad's title and image are pulled straight from the feed — your feed data effectively is your creative (OpenAI Ads developer docs, checked August 2026). Feeds hold up to 2 million products with one feed connection per ad account (OpenAI Ads Manager docs, July 2026), and the schema closely mirrors Google Shopping, so an existing Merchant Center feed gets you most of the way. OpenAI has said feed-based ads have been among the strongest-performing formats in its ads beta. Stale titles, missing attributes, and dead SKUs will follow you into the agent era — the business agent draws on the same feed.

3. Expose live data over MCP

This is the input most businesses don't have yet. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the open standard that lets an AI agent query live systems — inventory, order status, booking availability, current promotions — instead of relying on whatever the crawl captured. OpenAI listing "MCP tools for live business data" as a native agent input means the protocol is now part of the ad stack, not just a developer curiosity.

Start with the data that goes stale fastest: stock levels, pricing, appointment slots. Then think about signal beyond your own systems. A business agent that knows what customers are currently asking and saying — the complaints, comparisons, and questions surfacing in communities this week — answers differently than one working from a static site crawl. That community layer is what Prowlo provides: a hosted, read-only MCP endpoint over Reddit, X, Hacker News, Mastodon, and RSS, at $19/mo with a 14-day free trial, no card. Disclosure: Prowlo is our product. For the broader tooling landscape, see our comparison of Reddit MCP servers.

4. Decide what the agent may claim — before it speaks

Custom instructions are your policy layer. Write down what the agent may promise on pricing, discounts, availability, guarantees, and anything regulated — and what it must route to a human. Design the lead-gen form deliberately: which fields qualify a lead versus kill the conversation. An agent negotiating on your behalf with no claim policy is a compliance incident waiting for an auction to serve it.

The four inputs a ChatGPT business agent runs on

What OpenAI reads, and what you can fix before it does

Agent inputWhat OpenAI does with itWhat to fix now
Website crawlAuto-generates the business profile: FAQs, support info, contextCurrent pricing/policies on-site; unblock AI crawlers
Product feedSupplies titles, images, prices, availability per SKUSpec-compliant feed, `is_ads_eligible` set, no stale SKUs
MCP toolsLive answers: inventory, bookings, orders, market/community signalStand up read-only endpoints for fast-changing data
Instructions + formsBounds what the agent claims; captures the leadWritten claim policy; minimal qualifying form fields

What should you watch before spending?

Three unknowns are worth tracking. First, prominence: nobody has documented how agent ads look to end users yet — placement decides whether this is a trickle or a channel. Second, access: the Agent campaign type is visible only to select advertisers, with no public pricing. Third, the trust boundary: OpenAI currently states "ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you" (OpenAI, February 2026) — how that line holds once ads are conversations will shape user tolerance.

One thing isn't unknown: what the models say about you between ad impressions. Reddit alone accounts for 40.1% of all LLM citations (Similarweb, May 2026 data), which means your community record feeds both the organic answer and, plausibly, the context around your agent. That groundwork is covered in why Reddit became the top source for AI answers — it's worth doing whether or not you ever buy an agent ad.

FAQ

Who sees ads in ChatGPT?

Logged-in adult users on the Free and Go plans in the US, as of the current test. Paid tiers — Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu — remain ad-free, minors are excluded, and ads don't appear in Temporary Chats or the Atlas browser (OpenAI Help Center, checked August 2026).

Can you turn off ads in ChatGPT?

Partially. Free-plan users can dismiss individual ads, toggle ad personalization off, and clear ads data under Settings, then Ad Controls. There's also an "Ads-Free" option on the Free plan that removes ads but reduces message limits. Fully ad-free ChatGPT otherwise requires a paid tier like Plus (OpenAI Help Center, August 2026).

Do ads change ChatGPT's answers?

OpenAI says no: "Ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers." Ads run on systems separate from the chat model, advertisers cannot shape or rank responses, and they receive only aggregate view and click data — no chat contents, memories, or precise location (OpenAI, February 2026 announcement and Help Center).

How much do ChatGPT ads cost?

There's no public rate card. The invite pilot required a $50,000 minimum after OpenAI cut it from $200,000 in April 2026 (eMarketer). The self-serve Ads Manager beta, open since May 5, 2026 at ads.openai.com, uses auction-based CPM or CPC bidding with budgets you set yourself.

What are ChatGPT business agent ads?

A campaign type spotted in ChatGPT Ads Manager on July 31, 2026 (Search Engine Land). Instead of linking to a website, the ad opens a conversation with an AI agent configured by the advertiser — built from a site crawl, custom instructions, product feeds, MCP tools for live data, and lead-gen forms. It's in limited testing.

Do products from an ads feed show up in organic ChatGPT answers?

No. During the beta, OpenAI states products uploaded to an Ads Manager feed are eligible only for ads and won't appear in organic conversations. Organic shopping results come through a separate pipe — ChatGPT selects those independently, and OpenAI says they are not ads (OpenAI docs, July 2026).
